As soon as the legislature reconvenes on Monday, an investigation into the suspension of public prosecutor Busisiwe Mkhwebane will begin, but it is not yet uhuru for her.
The investigation was put on hold for two weeks while the opposition Democratic Alliance and the president argued their cases in the Constitutional Court challenging the High Court’s ruling reversing her suspension.
In South Africa, Busisiwe Mkhwebane held the role of fourth public prosecutor from 2016 to 2022, when she was fired. Her impeachment process has been going on for a while now, with no end in sight.
However, the strategy to impeach her began in 2017, when the Democratic Alliance submitted a request for her dismissal based on Section 194. It also mentioned her dishonesty, lack of skill, and other things.
The impeachment probe had restarted in parliament after making progress in fits and starts. Mkhwebane has requested the removal of the evidence leaders. The Section 194 Committee, however, denied the application, therefore the evidence leader will continue to work as the case progresses.
While twenty witnesses testified before the committee about the allegations made against the public prosecutor. Busiswe herself has not been heard yet. But after the resumption, that should start.
